CROWN & BRIDGE DENTAL PROSTHESIS

(Fixed Dental Prosthesis)

Some amount of material is removed from the surface of tooth in prosthetic construction and a procedure named CUTTING OF TOOTH (tooth reduction) is performed. These prostheses are used by being attached to teeth and cannot be removed by the patient.

In case of missing of one tooth or more teeth, fixed prosthesis named BRIDGE is used to be placed instead of missing teeth by being anchored by the neighboring healthy, natural teeth or an implant.

Fixed prosthesis completely capping or encircling of tooth which has lost extremely materials due to tooth decay or trauma in order to add aesthetics and functioning are named CROWN.

PARTIAL DENTAL PROSTHESIS

These are prostheses made by getting support from natural teeth and soft tissues in mouth. The attachment is ensured by attaching metal pieces named clasps (hooks).

WHAT TO DO AFTER GETTING A TOTAL - PARTIAL DENTAL PROSTHESIS

*You may need a long period of time to get used to prostheses. New prosthesis may be felt like a foreigner and bigger than it used to be in your mouth. Your lip may feel itself like imprisoned.

*The time of getting used to it may be longer for those who got used to toothlessness for a long period of time and who would use a prosthesis for the first time.

*Prostheses may dislocate. These situations are more common for the lower jaw.

*It is harder to get used to lower prosthesis and takes a longer period of time.

*Prosthesis may cause nausea. This situation will disappear after a while.

*Consult your dentist in case of nausea lasting for a long time.

a.Early on, flow of saliva may increase due to stimulation of salivary glands.

b.Some letters may not be spelled easily because of the reason that the motion of the lip is limited and you may have speech disorders. This situation will improve over time. You should read books out loud, and misspelled words should be repeated.

c.You may have chewing difficulty. Effective chewing may be regained approximately 6-8 weeks later than the operation.

d.Prostheses may dislocate or dislodge during biting with your front teeth. You must not bite with your front teeth.

Even prostheses highly compatible with the mouth may cause indentation and these situations may cause pain. This situation arises within the first 24 hours after placement of prosthesis.

Do never have procedures such as abrasion, addition, repair performed on your prosthesis beyond your dentist’s control.

Following removal of dental indentations and subsiding complaints, prosthesis (removable denture) should be removed at nights. This is so important for soft tissues in the mouth and oral mucosa to rest.

Your prosthesis (denture) should be kept or stored in water when you remove it.

*Specially produced tablets and solutions can be used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

*Adhesive creams or powders can be used for a very short time during the process of getting used to the prosthesis for new prostheses. In case of use for long periods of time, some undesired situations and conditions such as oral fungal infection (oral thrush, oral candidiasis) may develop in your mouth.

*The colors of prosthesis and artificial teeth may change depending on the period of time of use. In this case, consult your dentist.

*Every prosthesis has a lifespan. The harmony and compliance of prosthesis changes due to time-varying tissues and it becomes hard to use this prosthesis. Lifespan of a prosthesis is usually 5 years.

CLEANING OF REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS

1.Daily cleaning and care of prostheses have a great importance to prevent the formation and development of plaques, food debris and tartar. Regular care is essential for the maintenance of health of tissue lying under the prosthesis and the prevention of infections.

2.Remove food debris by running water over and rinsing your prosthesis after meals.

3.You need to brush your prosthesis before going to bed with various toothpastes or prosthetic care products. Abrasive powders should not be applied on the surface of your prosthesis during brushing because of the reason that they may damage the surface of your prosthesis. Special prosthesis brushes or normal toothbrushes may be used for brushing procedure.

4.Weekly prosthetic care should be done chemically by using some special effervescent prosthetic cleaning tablets along with daily brushing.

5.Despite of care mentioned above, stains and tartar processing into prosthesis in a long time can only be cleaned by your dentist with ultrasonic devices and your prosthesis can be polished by this way.

6. Keep in mind to visit your dentist once every six months regularly to use your prostheses for a long time just like the first day.
